PROGRAM

An international design competition to temporarily repurpose the lifeguard stations located at The Beaches neighbourhood in Toronto with the theme of “Freeze/Thaw”.

Dissipate plays on varying visual opacities that are affected by physical user interaction and movement. As in the freezing and thawing of liquid matter via heat energy, the project encourages touch and exploration to change the fragments of views. The outermost grounded layer allows the user to be drawn around, weaving their way to the inner suspended shell, experiencing the overlap in colour, light, and shadow towards the centre. The distance between these layers creates a visually enticing foreground-background relationship. At eye level, within the array of suspended translucent spheres, there are half-opaque, half-clear spheres that rotate faces based on user input or wind movement. From afar, Dissipate encompasses a delicate eye-catching colour palette.
