PROGRAM

Nuit Blanche Toronto is an annual city-wide event of contemporary art installations. Every installation is site specific, and is open throughout the night.

NOVA is an installation inspired by the sudden infinite expanse of a star’s explosion. The star increases in brightness and then slowly returns to natural state over time. The prototype structure initially proposed ambiguous tesselated tetrahedrons, which created an experience from user-triggered LED lights that increased in brightness as people approached it; the user’s closeness to the installation resulted in brighter LED lights.

After being selected for Nuit Blanche 2016, the design was updated to be accommodated in a hallway. With the support of melamine sheathing and mirror backing, the change in form along the wall was to entice the users to move in closer to experience the infinite mirror effect. Their proximity controlled the LED lights’ brightness, colour, and speed.
